Importing and Exporting Bookmarks in Netscape

Exporting your bookmarks is a good way of taking a backup copy to another location in case something happens to your system and you need to reload your software. Without a backup copy of your bookmarks you will need to spend considerable time rebuilding your bookmarks by revisiting all of the sites that you want bookmarked. If you have a backup copy stored elsewhere then you can import that back into your browser after reloading your software.

Another use for the import/export options is to copy your bookmarks between Netscape and Internet Explorer. You simply export your favorites/bookmarks from one browser and import them into the other. You can also import into Opera.

While the import/export option is in the File menu in Internet Explorer, it is not as easily found in Netscape. In fact these options are in different locations in the different versions of Netscape.

Netscape 4

To get to the import/export options in Netscape 4 you must first select the Bookmarks button to the left of the Location bar and then select Edit Bookmarks from the menu that appears.

The bookmark edit screen will appear.

From here you need to select File and then either Import to import bookmarks or Save As to export bookmarks.

Netscape 6

In Netscape 6 the bookmarks button is replaced by a bookmarks menu in the menu bar at the top of the screen. To get to the import/export options in Netscape 6 you must first select this Bookmarks menu and then the Manage Bookmarks option from the menu.

The bookmarks management screen will appear.

From here you need to select File and then either Import Bookmarks or Export Bookmarks.

Netscape 7

To get to the import/export options in Netscape 7 you must first select the Bookmarks menu and then the Manage Bookmarks option from the menu.

The bookmarks management screen will appear.

From here you need to select Tools and then either Import Bookmarks or Export Bookmarks.
