Question: A while back I had read a small tip in a computer magazine which gave instructions on how to lock a folder using alt 255(ascii) at the command line. I remember using the ren command with it. would you please give me the step by step details on how to lock and then also to undo that command.
Answer: I had not come across this method of locking files before but it appears to work and is easy to apply (provided that others do not realize what you have done since unlocking is easy too).
To lock a folder type ren followed by a space then the name of the file then another space and the filename again. Next hold down the Alt key and type 255 on the numeric keypad. Release the Alt key and press enter to apply the change.
To unhide the folder type ren followed by space and the filename, then hold down Alt and press 255 on the numeric keypad. Release the Alt key and type a space and the filename again. Finally, press enter to apply the change.
