Unconditional Format
Question: Is there a switch for the format commands that sre 5.0 or later so that the format actually zeroes every sector like the format version 3.1?

Answer: Yes there is.
format a: /u
The above command will perform an unconditional format of the disk which cannot then be unformatted. This switch is valid from DOS 5.0 onwards including various versions of Windows even though it is not listed in the help on more recent versions.
